Home town of Marco Polo
– full day tour by hydrofoil
Lying on a small peninsula surrounded by city walls and fortresses, Korčula is one of the most beautiful medieval cities on the Adriatic Coast. Korcula is entirely covered in pine forest so the Greeks named the island Korkyra Melaina, meaning “Black Korčula”. Famous traveler Marko Polo was born there or so many believe. We tour its charming streets to magnificent Cathedral of St Mark who is the city’s patron saint. There are a lot of squares with Renaissance palaces, town loggia which can be seen along the way. The excursion by boat will takes you to Korčula sailing along the island of Mljet and Elaphite islands.
Culinary agree only on one thing – truffle in gastronomy is on top level. Unusual underground hidden bulb, with no plant above ground is very difficult to find. Only, a well trained dog can sniff them. Truffles grow in grey soil, in woody humid area of Motovun in the valley Mirna.
Exactly that is where we go with a truffler and with his well dressed dogs seeking his majesty –truffle.
During our 3 hour walk through the forest truffler will tell us all the secrets and particulars about truffles. After that, lunch will be served on base of truffles followed with wine in a specialized restaurant.
Now this is what impresses me. Imagine how many generations were rested in the shades of this beautiful tree, how many bottles of olive oil it provided or how many battles were fought in it the vicinity of this proud tree during the last 15 centuries. Just touching this tree with your bare hands takes you far away into the imaginary land of how it used to be.
Kastela is the city adjacent to Split and is composed of 7 Kastela towns. The names of 7 Kastela are as follows:
Kastel Stafilic – From my point of view, the must see thing in Kastel Stafilic is the olive tree which is 1,500 years old. It bears a witness of continuous noble surroundings and the arts and crafts of local farmers.
Kastel Novi – a walk through the narrow typical coastal streets of Kastel Novi, along the stone halls and arcades leads you to the cellars of Kastela’s wine makers. That is where they store their quality wines for which they cared through the year.
