Dubrovnik Airport (DBV)

cilipi-airportThe International Dubrovnik Airport, also referred to as Cilipi Airport, is located approximately 15 km from Dubrovnik, one of the most magnificent medieval fortified cities in the world.
As such, Dubrovnik is listed in the UNESCO registry of world monumental heritage and has a long tradition of being among the world’s top tourist destinations. The panoramic view of Dubrovnik city walls is one of the most recognizable trademarks of Croatian tourism.

Back in the 80’s it was nothing unusual finding its photo all over world magazines, promoting the Dubrovnik tourist offer or just a plate of pasta of any product whose creators thought the image of Dubrovnik in the background would certainly sell it. This just proves what kind of popularity Dubrovnik enjoys for many years now.

Of course, its popularity reflects in the constant growth of traffic at Dubrovnik Airport which from one year to another breaks its own records. The statistics show that in 2007 the number of passengers increased by 2% compared to 2006, while 2008 was even more successful demonstrating a further 4% growth in number of passengers which were over a million for a several years in a row. Certainly contributing is the fact that the number of airline companies which fly to Dubrovnik Airport is also growing, so today operating flights to Dubrovnik on regular or temporary basis are the following ones: Croatia Airlines, Dubrovnik Airline, Trade Air, Aer Lingus, Air One, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Estonian Air, Iberia, Jetairfly, Luxair, Lufthansa Cityline, Clickair, Flybe, Flyglobespan, Germanwings, Norwegian Air Shuttle, TUIfly and Sky Europe.

dubrovnik-airport1The perspective for 2009 is even better, as many new destinations will be introduced. For instance, EasyJet scheduled new flights from Dubrovnik Airport to London, Liverpool, Berlin and Geneva. The British Airways also announces increased number of flights to London-Gatwick airport. Starting from 29th of March there will be daily flights connecting Dubrovnik to London, while on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays there will be even two daily flights. Another British low-cost company Flybe is adding a new route this summer from Dubrovnik to Southampton while Jet 2 will be connecting Dubrovnik to Belfast (on Saturdays) and to Leeds (on Sundays) from May to October. In 2009 Germanwings is introducing a new route from Dubrovnik to Berlin. A brand new route will be introduced also by Blue 1 airlines which will be flying from Helsinki to Dubrovnik Airport two times a week (on Mondays and Thursdays) from 22nd of June to 17th of August, which will be a first direct connection between these two cities. Norwegian Air Shuttle is adding a new route this summer from Dubrovnik to Varsava operating on Thursdays. A significant number of flights will be connecting Dubrovnik to several cities in Span in the 2009. Iberia will be flying to Madrid three times a week from June 2nd, and five times a week from July 2nd. The Clickair Company, which last year introduced flights from Dubrovnik Airport to Barcelona, this summer is adding another route to Valencia twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This will without a doubt bring a further significant growth in number of passengers to Dubrovnik Airport.

cilipi-airport-dubrovnikHopefully, with the reconstruction of the old airport building Dubrovnik Airport will finally reach its goal set by the program “Two millions of EU passengers”. The old building should be turned into a completely new terminal with larger capacities and than integrated with the “Terminal A” built in 2006 into a completely modern complex ready to welcome two millions of passengers a year or more. Such large efforts in improving the facilities and offer of Dubrovnik Airport couldn’t have gone unnoticed. Over the past few years the Dubrovnik Airport received recognition and several prestigious awards. The Croatian Chamber of Commerce-Dubrovnik County Chamber of Commerce has awarded it with the Zlatna kuna (Golden Marten) business excellence award for 2007, the Croatian Tourist Board has awarded it with the flattery tourist prize Plavi Cvijet (Blue Flower) in 2006, while in 2005 Dubrovnik Airport received the British Airways Best Performing Award (Shorthaul) for ground handling services in the competition of 65 international airports observed for over a year and a half and was proclaimed one of the British Airways’ best partners in the competition of all their European partner airports.
